In My Room

at Backwoods Gallery, Melbourne, 2018

Mother says there are locked rooms inside all women; kitchen of lust,
bedroom of grief, bathroom of apathy.
— from ‘The House’, Warsan Shire, 2014

In My Room invites the viewer to encroach on my personal space. Gilt-laden images are scratched into paper, with repetitious patterns challenging the singular appearance. Austrian-born artist Gustav Klimt once said that ‘art is a line around your thoughts’. This idea resonates in these works. Gold is a symbol of hope; here, I use it to create barely discernible repeated lines that become a metaphor for our patterns of thought. The lines are there to make a make a point — take a stand, risk something.
